Travel Do Tuesday: The Great Barrier Reef
Travel Do Tuesdays is back! After a long hiatus the weekly travel work is back, along with season two coming out February 2nd. If you’re not familiar with the weekly blog post, check out the first post I ever made. In a nutshell I’m going to talk about a place I’d like to travel to, someone I’d like to meet while on the road, or a piece of tech I’d like to buy while I travel. It always starts with “I am going to…” so that you can make this into an action statement. Because travel doesn’t do you any good if you don’t get out there?
With that being said, let’s get started with a bang.
I am going to…
Visit The Great Barrier Reef. As you may or may not know, I have a love affair with Australia. I almost went to study in Sydney for a semester while back in university. But I wasn’t quite able to swing it with my studies (darn you independent majors!).
But one thing that has always fascinated me is The Great Barrier Reef. It’s the world’s largest coral reef system, covering over 344,000 square kilometers (or 133,000 square miles) and can be seen from outer space. It’s an incredible place for marine life to live, and tourism is HUGE; over 3 billion dollars a year to be exact.
Sadly, like Venice, The Great Barrier Reef is shrinking due to runoff, global climate change, and a variety of other factors. Though the reef is now mostly protected, a study conducted in 2012 estimates that the reef has lost half of its size since 1985. It is for that reason (among others) that I want to visit, because it is an incredible natural wonder that could be gone in my lifetime. And I want to be able to tell my hypothetical children and grandchildren about my experience there.
Season two comes out in two weeks. More updates to follow!
